Sex therapist Gigi Engle says the explosion of gooning can be traced to Twitch and TikTok communities, who stream or video their “goon face” while masturbating. “Gooning is masturbating to the point before orgasming where you go into a trance-like meditative state. You reach a very heightened arousal state,” says Engle.
Gooning became an internet phenomenon because of the popularity of goon face content on TikTok, showing “the funny faces people would make when they would lose motor control in their face,” says Engle. On Twitch, people stream themselves masturbating, but don’t show the act itself because that would result in the content being removed — it's the faces people make while orgasming that holds the appeal.
